Champi is located 924 km south of Yokosuka, Japan, and has moved north-northeastward at 19 km/h (10 knots) over the past 6 hours. Champi will accelerate northeastward on the poleward side of the steering subtropical ridge and in 36 hours will be 704 km east of misawa Air Base, Japan. The system will gradually weaken under the highly unfavorable environment. Concurently, in 24 hours, Champi will begin to interact with the meiyu boundary and start extra-tropical transition and in 36 hours, will transform into a gale-force cold core low with an expansive wind field as it gets embedded in the baroclinic zone. Numeric models remain tight and gradually and evenly spread to a mere 204 km at 5 days, lending high confidence in the JTWC track forecast. The JTWC intensity forecast is also in good agreement with model solutions which show a steady weakening trend. Maximum significant wave height is 6.4 meters (21 feet).
